New Student Orientation
Master of Education Degree in Workforce Development Education

Welcome!

This orientation is intended to acquaint you with as many aspects of the program as possible. We hope it will help to alleviate any anxiety you have about beginning a graduate program, or about taking courses online, and you can refer back to the topics presented when you have questions.

Unique challenges and opportunities exist for students taking courses in an online environment. One opportunity is the chance to study with students both near to you and far away. One challenge is that students do not see one another or physically go to a campus, sometimes making them feel as though they are not a part of a program. This information will help address that challenge. While the online learning experience is not identical to the experience on campus, we will do our best to make you aware of the services offered to you as one of our students.

Before you begin the orientation, we want to call your attention to five things you should do before the semester begins:

  1. If you have not already done so, sign and return one of the Programs of Study that was sent to you with your admissions letter. Send the form to:

    RHRC Student Center
    Graduate Education Bldg. Room 214
    Fayetteville, AR 72701

We must have your signature on file since it is not always possible for you to come to campus to sign paperwork. The other copy you should keep for your files. More information about completing this form will be presented later in this orientation.

  2. Review your admission letter from the department and make note of your student identification number. It is the 9-digit number that is preceded by a "P". You will use this number to activate your computer accounts, among other things.

  3. Activate your computer accounts. You will do this through Computing Services. Directions are provided in Module 4.

  4. Review the technology requirements for the program in Module 5. It is imperative that you have the equipment you need to be successful. Online students are expected to have access to the software and equipment listed.

  5. Download and review the Procedures Manual for Graduate Students. The manual describes critical information you need to progress through the program.

It is also important that you familiarize yourself with the Graduate School's Web site. As a graduate student at the University of Arkansas, you must think of yourself as such, and understand that the Graduate School is your advocate, and is your dean's office.

The Graduate School provides an on-campus orientation for new graduate students before the start of each fall semester. Of course it is not possible for every student to attend, but they provide a lot of the information presented during orientation on their Web site. Much of this information is also provided here in our orientation.

Let's Get Started…

This orientation is organized by modules. Each module covers a different topic, and we recommend that you start at the beginning and review each of them in order. You can then refer back to them whenever you need to do so.

In some cases there is a short video vignette that accompanies the text in the module.

If you have questions that are not answered by this orientation, please contact the RHRC Student Center at (479) 575-4709.
