You have been assigned to a faculty advisor who will help you plan your program of study. When you received the letter of notification from the department stating that you were accepted into the program, the name of your advisor was on it, along with the advisor's e-mail address. Information about faculty and staff is also available on the WDED Web site.
It is your responsibility to contact your advisor. Faculty observe office hours, but the times they are available varies each semester. You may find it easiest to reach your advisor by e-mail. Faculty are not required to be on campus during the summer months, after final exams have been administered, or over the holiday breaks, so it is best to get in touch with your advisor during the regular semester.
Because this is an online program, students are expected to be self-directed. You have chosen a concentration area (ADED or HRDE) and you received a program of study outlining the courses you must take to complete your degree. Using the program of study and the rotation of courses on our Web site, you will be able to decide for yourself which classes to take each semester. It is helpful to look at both of these now and determine your entire program of study for the length of your student career.
Filling out the program of study and confirming your choices with your advisor sooner rather than later will make the process easier. It is also important that you keep a copy of your program of study and update it on a regular basis! Bear in mind that you will likely make changes as you go along, but you can estimate now how long you think it might take you to complete your coursework.
Courses are offered on a two-year rotation. The program is structured so that, if you would like to finish in two years, you must take 6 credit hours each fall, spring and summer. In addition, there are two sessions offered during the summer so it is possible to complete one course during the first five-week session and one course during the second five-week session. Many students, however, choose to take only one course each semester.
Many students find it most efficient to determine the courses they will take for the next semester, and then to e-mail those choices to their advisor to get approval.
You also need to download a copy of the Procedures Manual.
If you plan to take coursework leading to your license in adult education, let your advisor know this, and be certain to review the licensure plan on our Web site. More information on licensure is provided in Module 14.
