The concept of "academic honesty" may be new to you, and if so you need to inform yourself as to the meaning of the term. Even seasoned students need to remind themselves how to uphold academic honesty, thus preserving their own integrity and the integrity of the program.
The Graduate School's Web site provides the following definition of academic dishonesty:
Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty involves acts that may subvert or compromise the integrity of the educational or research process at the University of Arkansas. Included is an act by which a student gains or attempts to gain an academic advantage for himself/herself or another by misrepresenting his/her or another's work by interfering with the completion, submission, or evaluation of work. Academic misconduct may include those acts defined as research or scholarly misconduct. Allegations of research or scholarly misconduct on the part of graduate students are subject to this policy. However, such cases may also be reviewed under the University's Research Misconduct Policies and Procedures.
Academic/Research Misconduct: Numerous examples of academic and research misconduct are provided on the Graduate School's Web site. Be aware that acts of academic dishonesty can result in grade sanctions, placement on probation or suspension, or dismissal.
Another site you should visit to learn about, or re-familiarize yourself with, the concept of "academic honesty" is that of the Quality Writing Center, the resources of which will be covered in more detail later. After entering their site, download the handout titled, Plagiarism and Academic Honesty.
Plagiarism is one of the most common forms of academic dishonesty. One way to avoid it is to understand how to reference the work of others. In the Workforce Development Education degree program you will likely be asked to write research papers in APA Style (American Psychological Association). Sometimes, you will simply be asked to write any paper in APA Style (one that is not necessarily a research paper). While it is advisable, it is not mandatory for you, as a student pursuing your master's degree, to purchase the full manual. However, you must still learn to write in APA style.
As a first step, we recommend printing handout #14, How to Write a Research Paper Using APA Style, provided by the Quality Writing Center.
This handout introduces the basic concepts of writing in APA Style such as spacing, margins, headings, citing sources, etc.
The Purdue Online Writing Lab is a very popular Web site that offers information about an abundance of topics such as thesis writing, research, creative writing and, of course, writing in APA Style. Download a sample research paper written in APA Style as an example.
There are many other Web sites that explain how this is done, or you can purchase manuals that provide guidelines in a condensed form such as:
The Concise Rules of APA Style.
Mastering APA Style: Student's Workbook and Training Guide.
Another great resource is:
The Pocket Guide to APA Style by Robert Perrin.
